"Up and Down and Up we going!"
Gas prices have been a consistent roller coaster. Reaching prices as high as $4.50 and the obvious difference between station prices in urban, rural and developing areas. Elections came around and gas went down. It was politics as usual. Soon after the votes were counted, right back up they eased. Now riding around Philadelphia, in the distance i see WHAT! $1.99. I have not seen a dollar in years, but why? Why the sudden drop? Holiday shopping of course. Its a give take government. This holiday shopping season has already been predicted to be at its worse. So gas or gifts. Well lets see which benefits the government. On each gallon of gas, stations profit .30 cents. Now on each shopping transaction the state receives how much in sales tax? exactly. By lowering gas prices, consumers are becoming less cost sensitive to try and make this holiday season a great one. As tax payers hit the malls, the sales tax ring into Uncle Sam's office. Lets see what happens when its all said and done in 2009.
